# Is Sudoku Math? Logic, Not Arithmetic

Do you need math for Sudoku? No: the digits are only symbols, and the same puzzle works with letters. Where math does come in, and what it has found.

Updated 2026-11-06

## Quick answer

No: a classic Sudoku needs no arithmetic. The digits 1 to 9 are just nine different symbols, and the same puzzle works with letters, colors or shapes. What it takes is logic: ruling out what cannot go in a square until only one choice is left. Mathematicians do study Sudoku, though, from how many grids exist to how few givens a puzzle needs.

- Classic Sudoku needs no adding, subtracting or multiplying.
- Any nine symbols work: letters, colors or shapes instead of 1 to 9.
- Solving is logic: rule out what cannot go in a square, then place what must.
- Variants such as Killer Sudoku add sums as an extra rule.
- Mathematicians have counted 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960 finished 9×9 grids.

## The short answer

Sudoku is a logic puzzle that happens to use digits. Every rule is about being different: a digit may not repeat in a row, a column or a box. A square holds a 3 rather than an 8 because 3 is the digit missing there. You never need to know what 3 and 8 add up to, or which one is bigger.

## The same puzzle with letters

Here is the first Easy puzzle from our printable sheets with every digit swapped for a letter: 1 became A, 2 became B, and so on up to 9, which became I. Nothing else changed. It still has 51 givens and exactly one answer, and it can be solved with the same steps in the same order.

Picture Sudoku for children works the same way, with shapes in place of digits.

```text
C F . | . A G | H . .
. . H | . . C | . D .
A B . | . F D | C I G
------+-------+------
. C G | D I E | A . B
. I . | C H A | G E .
H . A | . G B | D C I
------+-------+------
G . C | A . I | . . H
. A F | . . . | . G .
E . I | G D F | B A C
```

## Can Sudoku be solved with math?

Not with a formula you work out by hand. People solve Sudoku step by step, with techniques that rule out candidates, and the usual techniques need no sums.

A computer can treat it as a math problem, though. Written as an exact cover problem, or as an integer program with 729 yes-or-no variables (one for each digit in each square), an ordinary 9×9 Sudoku is typically solved by an efficient program in a fraction of a second.

## Where the math is

Sudoku has kept mathematicians busy. Bertram Felgenhauer and Frazer Jarvis counted the finished 9×9 grids in 2005: there are 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960. Gary McGuire, Bastian Tugemann and Gilles Civario announced in 2012, after an exhaustive computer search, that a puzzle with exactly one answer needs at least 17 givens. And solving a Sudoku can be described as coloring a graph: draw 81 points, one for each square, and link every two points whose squares share a row, column or box. With the givens already colored, color the rest with nine colors so that no two linked points match.

## Where arithmetic does come in

Some variants make sums part of the rules. In Killer Sudoku, groups of squares called cages show their totals, and solving means adding up: the nine digits of any row, column or box always total 45, because ⁦1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 = 45⁩. You could add up in a classic Sudoku too, since the last empty square of a row is 45 minus the others, but spotting the missing digit gives the same answer without any sums.

## Does Sudoku make you better at math?

There is no strong, consistent evidence that playing Sudoku improves math skills. In brain-training research, people got better at the tasks they practiced, with little evidence that they improved at other tasks. Getting better at Sudoku mostly makes you better at Sudoku, and enjoying it is reason enough to play.
