The World Sudoku Championship
Updated 2026-10-05
How it works
Each year a national member of the World Puzzle Federation hosts the championship. Competitors tackle puzzles over several timed rounds, typically 100 or more in all, from classic Sudoku to variants and other puzzle types, in individual and team competitions. Since 2011 it has been held alongside the World Puzzle Championship.

The first championships
The first World Sudoku Championship took place in Lucca, Italy, in 2006 and was won by Jana Tylová of the Czech Republic. Thomas Snyder of the United States won the next two, in Prague in 2007 and in Goa, India, in 2008. The championships were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
