Sudoku maker: new puzzles to print

Pick a level and how many puzzles you want, and press Make puzzles. Your browser makes brand-new Sudoku puzzles on the spot, checks that each one has exactly one answer, and rates it with the same hint engine our app uses, so a puzzle marked Hard really needs a Hard technique. Print them four to a page or one big puzzle per page, with the answers after them.

Quick answer

Every puzzle is made new in your browser, not picked from a list, and has exactly one answer that logic alone reaches, without guessing. Its level is the level of the hardest technique it needs, on our app's six levels from Easy to Extreme. Easy and Medium puzzles take a moment; Hard to Extreme take a few seconds each, longer on a phone, because the maker keeps going until a puzzle needs exactly that level.

How the maker works

  1. It fills a whole grid at random, then takes numbers away in pairs opposite each other, keeping each removal only if the puzzle still has exactly one answer.
  2. It solves the result the way a person would, with our app's hint engine: one square at a time, always with the easiest technique that places a number.
  3. The hardest technique that solve needed sets the puzzle's level. If that is not the level you picked, it throws the puzzle away and makes another.
  4. All of this happens in your browser. The puzzles are not stored or sent anywhere.

Good to know

  • Each puzzle has a Solve step by step link that walks you through every move, with the technique of each step explained.
  • Easy puzzles keep about 50 numbers and Medium about 36, close to the counts in our app; harder puzzles keep only what one answer needs, usually 26 to 30.
  • The puzzles are yours to print and share as you like.
